Review Text

Masur who has been a practicing attorney and is a practiced mystery writer combines the best of both worlds in a murder one trial which keeps on turning up new evidence before your startled eyes and reversing itself in a high-powered continuity. Paul Slater, a lawyer and very much his own man even after he marries the daughter of a very prominent lawyer - Lucas Holmes Sheridan - is asked to defend Sheridan's young nephew who is accused of killing Dolly Wayne, the mother of a girl he has gotten in trouble. Not that Dolly Wayne is above reproach - she's about "as exclusive as a politician's handshake" - and as the case gets rolling in court it would seem that one of her lovers, also a lawyer and about to be discarded, has destroyed her ex-husband's will which would have disinherited her. Lots of dirty linen including a muddied, bloodied sweater is publicly exposed which family loyalties and prestige can no longer protect. All of it takes place in one dimension, popular and potentially televisual where anyone could play the part of the attorney and probably will. Before that happens, the story just about reads itself and assures its own audience. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
