Atoms and Other Small Pieces
The tales in this book have in common the themes of childhood, death, and how some ideas may turn what is already dreadful into utmost horror. In three pieces of fiction and one of poetry, the author paints with broad strokes portraits of human misery and wickedness - often mingled and magnified by a colouring of sarcasm and the darkest humour. The girl who loves her teddy bear, the mother who thinks she doesn't love her child enough, the unashamed egotist, the sensitive boy mocked by the other children of a ruthless society: these are the characters who share with us, in this short volume, their sufferings, their fears and also something of the feeble beauty of their transient beings.
