Not illustrated. 1882 edition. Excerpt: ...The artistic features will be quite as excellent as the literary. Their distinctive outlines are altogether harmonious with the character and writings of the eminent authors with whom they are associated. The Longfellow calendar contains a portrait of Mr. Longfellow, a picture of his residence, and various artistic embellishments which renrler the whole exceedingly attractive. The Emerson calendar has for its leading feature a ine-tree, apropos of Mr. Emerson's verses out e pine. There are also other characteristic features which will commend it to the readers of Mr. Emerson's works. The lovers of both Emerson and Longfellow cannot fail to welcome and prize heartily for the coming year these daily reminders of authors to whom they owe so much, and whose memories they so gladly cherish. Summer Editions have been issued of Mr. Howells's two books, which combine in the most charminrr way a story with descriptions of places through which the characters of the story work out the story's plot. These two books, " Their Wedding Journey," and its sequel, " A Chance Acquaintance," describe a journey from Boston to New York, up the Hudson, to Niagara Falls, down the St. Lawrence to Quebec, up the Saguenay, and many pleasant scenes in and around Quebec. Mr. Howells's descriptions of the scenery through which they pass do not interfere in the slightest with the development of the characters and the progress of their drama, but rather aid it and enhance its interest. These stories are put up in tasteful paper covers, and are about as delightful books as can be found for summer tourists, or for those who spend the summer months at the sea-shore or among the mountains.
