Prayers for long life and health (ayusyani).--The second class of hymns to which tradition fittingly assigns the name ayusyani (sc. suktdni)1 is not separated by hard and fast lines from the medicinal charms. Thus 19. 44, though it exhibits in the main the characteristics of an dyusyam, mentions specifically a considerable list of diseases; or 3.11 which also mentions diseases is employed, Kaus. 27.32--33, in an interesting symbolic practice directed against grdmya vyadhi: the commentators pretty consistently explain this as venereal disease 2. Throughout the srauta and grhyatexts are found in enormous quantity formulas and stanzas which pray for life (ayus), life's breath (prana, etc.). and incidentally for all other desiderata, such as varcas, bala, yas'as, klrti (strength and glory), cattle and other property. In the forthcoming Vedic Concordance the formulas and padas beginning alone with the words ayus and dirgha (ayus), or derivatives from these words, number 200 or more3.
