Especially in the case of Dr. and Mrs. Hodge was there room for suspense of judgment, and to obtain further information regarding them, we cabled on the same day, August 18th, to Shanghai: --"Are Hodges Peking?" On August 20th the reply came: --"Hodges believed certainly Peking." On August 22d a message without date came from Peking, the first word from the mission there since their letters of May 29th. It was signed "John Wherry," and read: --"Mackey some converts marvelously saved. Property mission private totally destroyed. Wire friends." Several words were mispelled: "were" for wire"; "Wherey" for Wherry"; and "Inculcats" for 'Inculcate," the Board's cable address, and there was doubt as to the meaning of the message. It was probable that it referred to Peking, and was meant to convey the assurance that all the regular Peking force were safe, and that they and Dr. Mackey and some converts had been marvelously saved, though all the property had been destroyed. Whether, in that case, Dr. Wherry included the Hodges in the regular Peking force, could not be known. On the other hand, it was conceivable that the message referred to Paotingfu, and "some converts" was a mistake for "Simcoxes." This seemed unlikely, especially since Dr. Mackey had been in Peking, and not in Paotingfu. To relieve the suspense, a cable was sent on the following day, August 23d, to the Rev. J. Walter Lowrie, who was in Tientsin, acting as nurse in the hospital and caring for refugees, asking: --"Who were killed Paotingfu?"
