Not illustrated. 1911 edition. Excerpt: ... with contrasting plain surfaces, lend delicacy to the richness of the decorations. In his treatment of facades Adam was fond of the oval Chaise Longue," lounge, screen and center table of pure Adam style, delicately decorated. The cane is dull gold and "Adam green," and the upholstery cream colored enclosing pointed arches, and of fluted columns, two stories in height, supporting the pediment of the roof and showing statues in niches between and, in the story above the niches, medallions with figures in relief near the top of the wall. He preferred for the outside treatment of windows separate rails rather than a long balcony, and often of grouped windows, as he did doors under a flattened arch. Adam interior decorations are on architectural lines and basis--the framework, as it were, laid out on quite structural principles. He liked ceilings vaulted in sections of arches, with walls relieved by recesses and intervals of columns, placed vases and stands in niches built for them, made chimneypicces and mirrors to harmonize with their background, employed color on relief designs in his decorations and was partial to flutings used delicately in a narrow cornice. His library shelves were usually sunk into the walls, and a typical library, or English "great room," built by him in 1772, shows walls broken by richly decorated arches in keeping with the door heads and lintels, where slender pillars, decorated and carved, support triple daintily carved arches, with handsome ornaments. Fluted columns support the cove of the ceiling, which is elaborately carved in relief above a frieze of carved figures. Panel decorations on the walls form a delicate connection between ornate frieze and carved mantel and bookshelves. Robert more
