This is an egregious mistake, more often committed by managers or deputies than by principals; and we venture to ask, how in the name of wonder can the man be polite to customers, or give cheerful obedience to an employer, if he himself be the victim of continual rudeness, or ill-tempered and often unmerited censure? Clerks are human beings, and, as such, are liable to and should be admonished for any misconduct; but they are equals in the sight of God and of the law, and the mere accident of their being dependent on us, and defenceless, should never justify us in treating them in any other light. All men of business justly insist that their clerks shall be thoroughly honest; and yet there are many of them who overlook the fact that the treatment given to their clerks is anything but consistent with thorough honesty in themselves. In these days, clerking is not always a very sure or rapid road to fortune. The general spread of education, and the unwise and exceptional crowding of our great cities from immigration and other causes, have largely WHERE LS THE REJIEDYP 207 increased the difficulty of obtaining situations. As the supply thus exceeds the demand, compensation is also proportionally reduced. This is a great evil for the clerks; and some of the best and wisest men in the country have been endeavoring to point out a remedy. This is generally summed up in the advice to leave the cities and go out Vl'est, to turn farmers, laborers, miners, anything but linger out life in struggling against an evil which is at present an inseparable condition of our national growth and policy.
