So the high-souled M'Nab was brought home, and a dear bargain he proved to poor Lurpipple; for, being overjoyed at finding himself among his relations at Invermailie, who vied with each other in welcoming back the exile, he became hopelessly fuddled before the polling-day, and was possessed with the idea that he, M'Nab, was the Conservative candidate. It was with some difiiculty that he was conducted to the polling-booth, for he exhibited a strong desire to address the electors at several convenient points on the route. On arriving within the schoolhouse where the voting was going on, he proceeded to shake hands with the policeman at the 'door, with the presiding clerk, and with his assistants. Being then asked for whom he wished to record his vote, he replied "For M'Nab, of course; wha d'ye think I'm here for?" "There is no candidate of that name," replied the presiding oflicer gravely.
