Arctic Interlude : Independent to North Russia
The full account of a disastrous Allied Arctic operation to send merchant ships independently to North Russia from Iceland, concerns the fortunes and misfortunes of 13 merchant ships and their crews attempting to reach North Russia in late Oct/early Nov 1942. They were spaced some 200 miles apart and no escort provided; 7 were British, 5 American and 1 Russian; 5 made it, 3 aborted, 5 were lost. The true story of Operation FB fills a neglected gap in the published history of the Arctic sea war, with a strong human element throughout, from personal recollections of those involved. 103 photos, 43 illus, 6 maps.
