Description

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1897 edition. Excerpt: ...behind the posterior maxillae, exhibit each a short and thick, indistinctly biarticulate basal part strengthened by several chitinous stripes, and carrying in front 2 short bristles. The terminal part, which as a rule, forms a geni'culate bend with the basal one, is composed of 4 distinctly defined joints rapidly diminishing in size distally, and is.generally turned backwards, though able to move forwards. Its lst joint is rather large, equalling in length the 2 succeeding ones combined, and is ciliated along the 'inferior edge, carrying moreover.at the end below a_ short bristle. It is very movably connected with the succeeding joint, whereas the articulation between the latter and the 3rd joint seems to be much firmer. Both these joints, like the lst, have at the end below short seta. The last joint is very small, and carries on the tip a very long and slightly curved claw turned anteriorly, and very finely 'denticulated along the concave edge. At the base of the 'claw 2' very small hair-like bristles are seen issuing from the terminal joint. The posterior. legs (fig. 15) are much more slender than the anterior, and, as stated above, reflexed_ with their outer part more or less turned upwards. The basal part is apparently composed of a short proximal, and a longer distal joint, the latter carrying 3 slender setae, 2 of which issue from the end, the 3rd from a separate ledge of the lower edge. The terminal part, which forms with the basal one a strong elbow-like bend, is apparently only composed of 2 joints, the lst of which is narrow linear, with a slender seta at the end behind, and with the anterior edge slightly serrate. The 2nd joint is much smaller, very narrow, and provided somewhat beyond the middle of the...show more
