Review Text

Slapdash gleanings from a mishmash of sources including Norman Douglas' Venus in the Kitchen, Brillat-Savarin, and The Perfumed Garden, retailed in a spirit ranging from the reasonably prudent (Spanish fly is not worth the risk of real damage) to the dithyrambic (see the gurglings about getting it on with pot or opium). Candidly admitting that most of the foods and herbs he mentions have unspecific benefits at best, Selden is driven back on vitamin and mineral content as their chief raison d'etre. Much glib quasi-information, a smattering of recipes (some actually edible), and a lot of ribald rhapsodizing ("Jizzum is the flower of a man's blood"). Elements of the joy-through-nutrition audience may bite. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
