Our customer reviews

In An Antique Land is the first non-fiction book by Indian author Amitav Ghosh. According to the abstract, Ghosh finds himself in Egypt in 1980 tracing the story of a twelfth century Indian "slave", Bomma, who was brought to Egypt by his Jewish master. In fact, Bomma gets very few mentions throughout the book, and Ghosh tells the reader more about Bomma's master, Abraham ben Yiju, his travels, his business and family, and the correspondence in which Bomma is occasionally mentioned. The dry, rather slow-moving tale is relieved by Ghosh's own experiences in Egypt and Mangalore. While Ghosh includes quite a lot of information about twelfth century Egypt and India, it would have been unpalatable without the description of his own encounters with the fellaheen, and other villagers of rural Egypt as well as reminiscences of his childhood in Dhaka. more
