In the first half of the year the stay of rain in all South India deprived the poor of work and wages, caused large exportation of grain 'and raised the price of food' by one-fourth. Another famine was much feared quently moderate but, timely rains have made the year nu usually fruitful. The district has also been exceptionally free from cholera and other deadly epidemics.
