Excerpt: ...purpose; and advantage was taken of the demonstration plots and other agricultural exhibits, and of the presence of so many of the Department's agricultural staff on the spot, to give a regular Summer Course of Agricultural Instruction free to a class of twenty young men. This course was given by Professor HcAlpina, n.sc, and Mr. James L. Duncan, B.sc, aided by the Department's agricultural ktaff. A synopsis of the exhibits and detailed catalogues of several parts of the Section have been published, and after the close of the Section it is contemplated to issue a full record of the undertaking. With regard to results, the Department's primary object in organising this Section was educational, and that object has been satisfactorily attained. That is to say, the idea was to give a concrete, and suggestive notion of the sort of work intended to be done by the country through the medium of schemes of agriculture and technical instruction under the Act. County Council Committees who are being advised to have an itinerant instructor in agriculture would find it hard to appreciate what was meant by this advice, if they had never seen the work of an agricultural instructor, or had never seen a demonstration plot. That difficulty is removed for them by a visit to Cork. Technical Instruction Committees will have a better conception of the work before them on seeing the model laboratory and workshop, and the striking collection of specimens of work from various technical schools at home and abroad, and on seeing some of the fruits of technical instruction in the industrial section.
