It rises near the Anne Saddle and flows east then north for approximately 6 km until it meets the Henry River, itself a tributary of the Waiau River. The St James Walkway, a popular tramping track, follows the Anne River for its entire length, and the Anne Huts are located near the river's mouth. The New Zealand region of Canterbury (M ori: Waitaha) is mainly composed of the Canterbury Plains and the surrounding mountains. Its main city, Christchurch, hosts the main office of the Christchurch City Council, the Canterbury Regional Council and the University of Canterbury.
