Mr. Smythe has occupied one of the foremost places in the irrigation moveme!; during the last decade and a half. He is, therefore, especially well fitted to write this history of what has been accomplished in making arid America habitable, and to forecast what the future may have in store by supplying water to the desert. No one who is interested in current events can read Mr. Smythe's book without feeling the vastness of this conquest of the desert--what it means to the future of the United States. As the author expresses it, " the ninetysevcnth meridian divides the United States almost exactly into halves. East of that line dwell seventy-five million people...
