Review Text

One diverting and involving winter-to-winter in Moscow's Diplomatic Row when Americans, British and Russians of all sexes and strata cope with or capitulate to Cold War exigencies. Among the hardier breeds: American Luke Randall not too enthusiastically with the CIA, caught in a profession - and a marriage - which do not appeal to his more sensitive inclinations; the British Ambassador, sure, cool, enjoying the parry and thrust of vintage diplomacy; a Russian Secret Police official in charge of a ragged lot of expatriots, who would much rather be chasing patriotic thieves; a brace of persistent, resilient journalists. Among the victims of West-East gear-meshing: young neophyte career diplomat in the British service, Richard Mortimer, who loves a Russian girl, Nina; unstable ex-Briton, Harry Waterman, spurred on by the promise of a return to England. Harry is killed in a car accident, after the last shred of escape is removed; Richard is forced to leave Nina, and is escorted home with a nervous breakdown. Luke Randall, and the French girl he loves, contemplate another winter in their frozen exile. . . . A convincing and spirited bugging of the Embassy circuit. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
