The stunning new novel from the internationally bestselling author of THE SHADOW OF THE WIND.

In an abandoned mansion at the heart of Barcelona, a young man - David Martin - makes his living by writing sensationalist novels under a pseudonym. The survivor of a troubled childhood, he has taken refuge in the world of books, and spends his nights spinning baroque tales about the city's underworld. But perhaps his dark imaginings are not as strange as they seem, for in a locked room deep within the house letters hinting at the mysterious death of the previous owner. Like a slow poison, the history of the place seeps into his bones as he struggles with an impossible love.

Then David receives the offer of a lifetime: he is to write a book with the power to change hearts and minds. In return, he will receive a fortune, perhaps more. But as David begins the work, he realises that there is a connection between this haunting book and the shadows that surround his home...

Review quote

The Angel's Game weaves the conventions of Wilkie Collins and Dickens into something original and surprisingly moving. -- Stephanie Merritt * OBSERVER * 'Beyond plentiful shocks and thrills, Zafon niftily treads the fine line between a story of paranormal events and one of psychological delusion.' -- Boyd Tonkin * INDEPENDENT * This is a gothic, page-turning, supernatural thriller...there is plenty here to keep Zafon fans happy. * PRESS ASSOCIATION *

Our customer reviews

I read this book after I had read The Shadow of the Wind and although it had an interesting plot premise, I just wasn't too enamoured. There was too much involved and although it started out well with the story of David Marshall, as soon as the plot tried to delve into the myuthical is became more farsical. After thoroughly enjoying 'Shadow of the Wind', I approached 'The Angel's Game' expecting a similar style, but found it altogether more gothic. While 'Shadow of the Wind' is all explained eventually by natural phenomena, 'The Angel's Game' crosses seamlessly over into the super-natural reminiscent of Umberto Eco's 'Baudolino'. The direct connection to 'Shadow of the Wind' is only in our postscrip introduction to the birth of Daniel Sempere, the main character in the latter; but the scenery is the same or similar: old Barcelona, the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, long deserted mansions and the bookshop of Sempere and Son. The ending leaves the reader thinking (is this not the mark of a good book?) was it super-natural, or was it the imagination of a schizophrenic? Indeed, one may ponder if all supernature is not in the imagination. I recommend this book to any reader, but for the millions who have enjoyed 'Shadow of the Wind', it is a must !show more
