Others were not hurt, but were homeless and destitute. One woman had her arms so badly crushed that she had to hold her three months old baby with her teeth by its night dress. Another young girl about sixteen gave birth to a child not more than two hours before Mr. Sexton took her to a hospital. There was hardly an instance where a whole family escaped--mothers mourning for children, children crying for mother and father, men almost crazed from the loss of their families, these were sights one met on every hand. One young Sicilian, who came over on the boat with us, was on his way to visit his family. After several days he went to Paris on his way back to New York. While there news of the earthquake reached him and he returned to his home to find it in ruins and all of his family killed except one brother and one sister, who were away visiting at the time. He lost forty relatives in all. One man we helped in Naples, a marquis and one of the wealthiest men in Sicily, lost his wife and three children and all his other relatives except a little niece. He was rescued after having been under the ruins for three days. Another nobleman, a magnificent looking gray haired man, over six feet tall, escaped with several bad cuts and bruises and was taken into a pension near our hotel. We went over to try to assist the refugees there and found that this man had nothing to put on but what he escaped in, his night shirt and a woman's cravenette which had been given him on the boat. He had no news of his wife and two daughters and was anxious to get out to search for them. We ordered a suit of clothes for him and in the meantime discovered...
