Description

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Amniotic fluid or liquor amnii is the nourishing and protecting liquid contained by the amniotic sac of a pregnant woman. The amniotic sac grows and begins to fill, mainly with water, approximately two weeks after fertilization. 10 weeks later the liquid contains proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and phospholipids, urea and electrolytes, all of which aid in the growth of the fetus. Amniotic fluid is produced by exudation of fluid through the skin of the fetus up until the 14th week of pregnancy at which point keratinization of skin occurs. During weeks 8-11, the fetus begins to swallow and urinate, which is why the amniotic fluid contains fetal urine in the later stages of gestation.show more
