"Jumbles," said the doctor, "you've had a narrow escape." "Then she's better," said Jumbles, eagerly. "She'll live this time," said the doctor, "but I won't answer for another time. Supposing you were to get drunk again, and" "But I shan't," said Jumbles, confidently. "Don't be too sure," said the doctor; "there's only one safe way for such as you." "What's that?" said Jumbles. "Go to the temperance meeting to-night," said the doctor, " and there you'll hear." "Well, sir," said Jumbles, " I don't know but what I were thinking about going. But I don't see why a man shouldn't have his glass. I don't believe they'll ever make a teetotaller of me." "Perhaps not," said the doctor; "but you go anyhow." Jumbles was so relieved in mind that he was ready to promise anything, and promise he did. The doctor went straight to Mr. Katchum, and told him the story of Jumbles, who was to be one of his audience. "I'll see what I can do," said Mr. Sobriety. The evening came.
