Excerpt: ...It is indeed a great thing to be a real teacher; not merely to impart information, but to create a desire for knowledge; not merely to cram with learning, but to indicate how to learn, not to remove obstacles, but to show how obstacles may be overcome, not to depress by criticism but to stimulate by judicious praise. It sometimes seems to me that there is much in present school methods which interferes with real teaching. 1 can remember in my school days that the teacher would give out the next days' lesson from page--to page--, and that was the end of his connection with that lesson until we had earnestly tried to solve its problems. If we failed he was then ready with helpful suggestions. We were obliged to think and think hard, his province being to judiciously assist us if our own thinking proved ineffectual. But nowadays--well l have seen how some teachers are obliged by the school system employed to write out the lesson on the blackboard and go over it with the pupils, clearing away all possible hindrances and making the road a dead level which offered no opportunity for climbing, presented no stimulating reward for successful effort. Physiologists of the present day are emphasizing the great need of thorough chewing of our food and are deprecating the use of predigested foods which need neither cooking nor mastication. Much the same criticism might be made of the educational methods which so prepare the lessons that the pupils have nothing to do but to swallow them. We need to Fletcherize our mental pabulum as well as our physical food. Chewing hard bread makes good teeth why will not struggling with hard problems strengthen the mental powers.
