His work was too partisan, as between one school and another, to gain much credit from the adherents of other schools. His Nationalism is State Socialism (using that term in its broad and democratic meaning, as against the perverted sense in which it is frequently used); to him intellectual and moral freedom would be the necessary sequence of the exactest economic regulation through the medium of the State; and theories based upon this or that single economic factor, or those looking toward the establishment of communities loosely regulated, appealed to him as insufficient, or chaotic and unreformative. Naturally the advocates of such theories hold that Bellamy has not analyzed the present or correctly outlined the future society. State Socialists ourselves, we unhesitatingly place his contribution to the world's progressive thought among the highest. The vision was true, and the effect upon his generation marvellous. He did not originate--even his insistence upon national as against international social evolution is a heritage from Goethe; he combined. He was a social architect, draining the world's models for his own. Marx, an economist microscopically examining details, studious of bases and strata, made ready the foundations; men like Lassalle were the energetic spirits who prompted us to the great task, and Bellamy was the draughtsman of the new social edifice.
