Saville, Chief Kngineer of the Board of W a t e r Commissioners, Hartford, Conn., made the following statement: "The preliminary estimate for cleaning three miles of 30-inch pipe was $15,300, a little more than the necessary interest for one year on the amount necessary to lay a new 36inch main. If, however, the construction of the 36-inch main could be put off for five years without detriment to the service, the saving to the city was estimated to be about $60,000. Thirty-three thousand and ninety-three feet of 20-inch mains were cleaned with a net increase of carrying capacity of 61 per cent. "The renewal has been postponed by the cleaning work for at least five years." The National Water Main Cleaning Company has recently taken a contract for cleaning water mains at Selma, Ala. and is at the present time fulfilling its contract at North Baltimore, 0.. Columbia, S.
