Review quote

Celebrating heroines from all around the world, this collection of stories from the author/ illustrator duo responsible for Tales Told in Tents, also contains 'how to' pages to inspire all 21st-centry Amazons. Illustrator Sophie Herxheimer uses her wonderfully warm and rich palette brilliantly to reflect the different cultures from which these legendary women arose. This book adds both important and under-represented subject matter to the burgeoning genre of stories from around the world. Bookseller 4 stars. Sally Pomme Clayton's powerful retellings of strong woman stories from all over the world, and Sophie Herxheimer's vivid illustrations, will inspire and help you to be a 21st century Amazon. www.bettybookmark.co.uk The illustrations are painted in strong colours, often with equally strong outlines, dramatically emphasising the strength of the young women of the tales and enhancing the folktale imagery on the whole...The pages are devoted to the modern young Amazon are careful to include a mixture of races and abilities in the girls portrayed, and suggest some fun activities as well as giving a breadth of interpretation of what it is to be an 'Amazon'. Books for Keeps Could provide the spur for some useful thinking about ways of behaving in today's big, bad world. It might also succeed in inspiring a more active and practical approach to living that could help prevent total submersion in today's supine celebrity culture. School Librarian This excellent book contains seven traditional stories of women warriors from all over the world, interspersed with activities that relate the morals of the stories to children's lives. It has a great feeling of excitement throughout with captivating language complemented by Herxheimer's beautiful illustrations. 5-7 Educator
