Another firm that has worked aluminum on a large scale is Giuseppe Raveri, of Turin, who is expected to do still more in the near future. But the firm that has gone way ahead in the use of aluminum in all its forms is Fonderia Emilio Benini, of Florence. In these works a good many tons of aluminum have been cast in the fortn of submarine mines for coast defence, made on a special design approved and adopted by the Italian navy. The works are at present forming two new patterns of such mines, and I hear that the adoption of aluminum has allowed them to obtain the result so long sought for, of a mine that keeps a constant level below the surface of the water, independent of the rising and lowering of the tide. Lately Fonderia Emilio Benini have undertaken the manufacture of furniture for the use of ships, so combining the advantage of lightness with incombustibility, which is of prime importance, especially on board men-of-war. The two photos, that we send herewith, represent two patterns of chests of drawers intended for captains and ofi icers' cabins respectively. They are of the best finish, and are highly appreciated by the officers of the navy, who will adopt them, no doubt, for all of the ships. Fonderia Emilio Benini have also used aluminutn to make air tanks for lifeboats, reservoirs for the manufacture of wax candles, wine tanks, and other implements for enology. Aluminum is also largely used for steel works, and many small manufacturers use it for different purposes.
