Description

When you can't trust yourself, who can you believe? Everything about Anna's life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There's Nick, solemn and brooding; Cas, lighthearted and playful; Trev, smart and caring; and Sam ...who's stolen Anna's heart. Reserved and always controlled, Sam does everything with purpose. When the Branch decides it's time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape, killing the agents sent to retrieve them. Anna is torn between following Sam or staying behind in the safety of her everyday life. But her father pushes her to go, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There's just one problem. Sam and the boys don't remember anything before living in the lab -- not even their true identities. Now on the run, her father's warning in her head, Anna begins to doubt everything she thought she knew about herself. She soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected.
And if they're both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.

Our customer reviews

Altered was an interesting book to say the least, it's about a girl called Anna who helps her father run a lab in their basement which has four boys who are being genetically altered for a government experiment. The book follows the friendships and a little love interest that develops between Anna and 'the boys'. Altered is full of twists and turns as the story develops especially concerning the main character Anna but I predicted majority of them a few pages before they happened which was a bit annoying. There are some strong morally huge questions that are only touched upon in the book, for one locking away human beings! I won't mention many more as it will give away parts of the story. I enjoyed the book but was expecting a HUGE explosion in the plot as there was such a build up of hope and excitement as you get further into the book, but as I predicted some of the twists before it happened I was left deflated and disappointed:( this did take a little away from the enjoyment of the story) and the action involved added a little extra to it, I would recommend this book to others but I would say as your reading it also think about the morals and legality issues as they are mind blowing which I think a lot of people miss as their wrapped up in the story! I hope this review helps you, please rate it, it really means a lot. Thanks for reading:)show more

Favourite Quote: "The quote reminded me of that feeling you get when you start to wake up from a dream you don't want to leave. That crushing sensation in the centre of your chest, like you are losing an important piece of yourself you won't ever get back." This book was a quick, fast paced, action packed read. It was actually amazing, I loved it and I give it 5/5 stars! Let's start with the plot, the first 30 pages or so were slow for me but after that WOW it just exploded. There were so many twists and turns, most of which I never guessed at all! Let's be honest everyone loves a book where they cannot guess what happens! As it said it was very action-packed, the author writes very good action scenes, but she also put a lot of thought into the science side of the story and that was very interesting to read about! As for the characters I loved them all. Anna our main character was great, I loved her strength and stubborniss and also her relationship with Sam was writing perfectly. Sam was brilliant, even though he's a mystery during the first half of the book but after that he slowly opens up and I loved him! Cas was hilarious, just what the book needed to lighten the scenes, Nick was a douche thoughout most of the book but I did really like him towards the end and then there's Trav who knew lots of quotes off by heart just like me! So how could I have not liked him?! Overall I highly recommend this book to everyone! I cannot wait to read the next installment!show more

One word: swoon. There were WAY too many hot boys in this book that it practically gave me heart palpitations from page one. It was almost too distracting, but in a good way. The premise of the book was initally off-putting for that reason. It just seemed like a way for an author to put a bunch of crazy attractive boys in one room together and have them compete for Anna's love. Plus the setting seemed like some sort of fetish fantasy. How wrong I was. Even though I liked Nick from the start (I'm so weird, I know), Sam was a great character. He was confused but driven, and still wanted to protect his pseudo-family, comprised of himself, Trev, Cas, Nick, and Anna, the protagonist. Anna constantly wants to prove herself to these boys, as a friend, as someone they could trust, as someone who could defend herself, and could defend them as well. She was willing to help them escape the laboratory in her father's basement and pursue the answers behind the boys' amnesia and their genetically altered abilities. The mysteries behind Sam, Nick, Cas, and Trev's tattoos and other clues are what drives the story forwards. The suspense keeps building and building, and although I called a few aspects of the ending, I was pleasantly surprised where the story left off. There was enough intrigue that I was kept engaged while entertained by each of the characters' quirks and personalities. I particularly loved reading Cas' dialogue. He's smart-mouthed and quick to add a hilarious remark to lighten the tension. While Trev is caring and attentive, Sam serious and brooding, and Nick angry and tense, Cas is able to downplay these clashing personalities, even while he is pegged as the "annoying" one. Anna is also able to handle the boys, even as she learns of their backgrounds as memories and answers to their questions start to surface. One of my main faults was that these personalities were too cut and dry, or too stereotypical. I wished for a little more depth for some of the boys and for Anna, who's interest in Sam was too grade-school crushy for me. While I don't think the story would have been as forceful without all these attractive men (who were too attractive, in my opinion), the ultimate unveiling at the end was well-worth the wait. I'm so excited to read the next books, and I highly recommend this one to anyone up for some hot guy action coupled with thrills and secrets.show more
