Excerpt from An Alphabetical Arrangement of All the Wesleyan Methodist Ministers and Preachers on Trail in Connexion With the British and Irish Conferences: Showing the Circuits and Stations to Which They Have Been Appointed From the Commencement of Their Itinerancy to the Conference of 1896
The Eighteenth Edition of the Alphabetical Arrangement which is new presented brings down the appointments of the Conference to 1896. In the preface to the last Edition there was an account of the previous Editions. The first list was prepared by John Fawson, the third president after the death of Wesley. Mr. Fawson was elected president in 1793, and in 1795 he published, in a 12mo book of twenty-four pages, A Chronological Catalogue of all the Travelling Preachers in the Methodist Connexion with an Address by Dr. Coke. Since the publication of the last Edition Mr. George Stampe, of Grimsby, has sent, for my perusal, from his remarkable collection of Methodist antiquities, a copy of this rare document. It is an alpha betical list of the itinerant preachers, With the date when each was called into the work; and in this list of ancient worthies there are many historic names. The document is so very rare that it ought to be reproduced in a permanent form, and, the necessary consent having been obtained, it is reprinted below. It cannot fail to be read with considerable interest.
