In January of the year 1815, the Laird McClellan placed an ad in the London Times offering his oldest daughters hand in marriage to the first man who could discover Allura's secret. Many men came to his castle in Eddington, Scotland in an effort to discover the mystery and all of the men failed.Hunter Gray is a battle-hardened English soldier who is looking to acquire land and wealth after the Napoleonic wars. When he learns about the offer in the Times, he sets all his hopes and desires on this single mission. He is determined and smart. He pursues Allura with hard-headed tenacity.Allura is independent and strong-willed, a bluestocking in a time when intelligent women are scorned. She is capable of running her family's estate and plans on doing so. She has been promised that she can marry for love. When the first suitors arrive and she learns of her father's plans, she is furious and determined to win the game her father has set in motion. When Allura and Hunter finally meet, she has donned a disguise in hopes of scaring Hunter from his mission. But he sees through her squinty-eyed, pursed lip look, scraped back hair, and dowdy clothes. It is her horrible disposition that nearly makes him back away from all that has been offered. Allura, however, finds that she is inexplicably drawn to Hunter despite the knowledge that he only wants her for the wealth and the power a marriage to her will bring him. As she begins to know Hunter, it is increasingly more difficult to continue her masquerade.Hunter has seen the dangerous, crumbling steps from the castle to the beach, the ones the sisters use to get to their sailboat. Frustrated and furious with the laird for allowing the girls such untold freedom, he renews his determination to find out where they go each night and win Allura for his own. On a stormy evening, understanding the danger of crossing the wind-swept sea, Allura sets out by herself to rescue a kitten. Realizing Allura has left the castle, Hunter races to the beach, cursing the weather and the ever willful woman he means to make his wife. Heading toward the island he thinks the sisters travel to on rough seas, he finds Allura clinging to her capsized boat. His heart stops for a moment. Everything he is and everything he wants for his future is at stake in those fateful minutes. By the time he pulls Allura to land, she is shivering from cold and weak from her struggles. In the long hours until dawn she steals Hunter's heart, and he is terrified.Hunter has discovered the island. Allura will be his wife and he will have all that he has ever wanted. But Hunter's half-brother arrives in Eddington. The man threatens the sisters as well as Hunter's newfound happiness. Guy is evil but he is not as evil as Hunter's step-mother. Hunter's distrust of women services with renewed force. His half brother reminds him of all the horrific events caused by the most significant woman in his young life.Allura is devastated when Hunter asks her to add to her marriage vows one more promise. He asks her to pledge never to go to the island without him. She is finally aware of his total distrust of her and fears that for Hunter this is an insurmountable obstacle. And without trust how can there be love?Hunter's half-brother plans a diversion to get Hunter away from the castle, and then he kidnaps Allura's sisters, taking them to the island. Unable to find Hunter, Allura sees no alternative save to race to her sisters. Hunter rescues the sisters and his cowardly half brother flees. In the safety of the castle Hunter professes his love for Allura and Allura does the same. He has forgiven her and he knows that with time he will trust her. In turn, Allura understands the dangers and that the promise he forced her to make was done with love not the need to control her. She knows that she has his heart and he has hers and that nothing will cause their love for each other to more
