In her first series book for Faber, Alafair Burke returns to one of the most memorable characters in contemporary US crime writing, NYPD Detective Ellie Hatcher.

When psychotherapist Helen Brunswick is murdered in her Park Slope office, the entire city suspects her estranged husband - until the District Attorney's Office receives an anonymous letter. The letter's author knows a detail that police have kept secret: the victim's bones were broken after she was killed, echoing a signature used twenty years earlier by Anthony Amaro, a serial killer serving a life sentence. Now, Amaro is asking to be released from prison, arguing that he was wrongly convicted, and that the true killer is still on the loose.

Ellie Hatcher and her partner JJ Rogan are tapped as the 'fresh look' team to reassess the original investigation that led to Amaro's conviction. The case pits them against both their fellow officers and a hard-charging celebrity defence lawyer with a young associate named Carrie Blank, who has a personal connection to the case. As both the NYPD and Amaro's legal team search for certainty in years of conflicting evidence, their investigations take them back to Carrie's hometown, and to deadly secrets left behind.

All Day and A Night – Excellent Police Procedural All Day and a Night by Alafair Burke is a police procedural crime thriller that is as smooth as silk well researched with a brilliant female detective and her partner. This being my first reading of Alafair Burke’s was my introduction to her Ellie Hatcher series of novel and it is easy to see why she is a best selling crime writer from the other side of the pond who will do very well here in the UK. Recently seperated psychotherapist Helen Brunswick is murdered in her office on a Sunday afternoon once she was ready to go home to her children. For the NYPD and the District Attorney’s office they are pointed in the direction that this murder had similarities to a series of murders in Utica and New York that had happened 20 years twenty years before. Anthony Amaro was serving a life without parole for the series of murders, but was only serving the sentence for one of the murders. Max Donovan has been tasked by the new DA to get a fresh look at all the cases involved and take over the Brunswick case which was going nowhere rapidly. Donovan selects the best detective team in the NYPD, Ellie Hatcher and JJ Rogan to be the fresh look team, Hatcher also just happens to be his partner. Little did they realise that they would be underpressure by Amaro’s new legal team led by celebraty lawyer Linda Moreland who was pressing for the release of her client at the earliest possible moment. Moreland had also taken on as an attorney Carrie Blank whos sister Donna was one of the victims of Amaro. As Amaro is released so begins a race against time to find out about the murders and find if Amaro really did commit the crimes. At the same time someone seems to have targeted Carrie Blank especially when someone tries to killer her. Ellie Hatcher and her partner are trying to find the truth and they know it will not be pretty wherever they find it. They have to ask the questions such as did the Utica PD cover up the murders or surpress evidence because someone is sending the New York DA alot of clues as to where to look for evidence. Who is sending the clues and why is the Donna Black murder different from the others is what is driving Hatcher and Rogan. The closer they get to the truth the more danger it could put Carrie Blank in. There are a plenty of twists and turns throughout the novel and some things you just cannot see coming. Amafair Burke’s writing is crisp and clear which makes it easy and a pleasure to read, whos dialogue between the characters was excellent. You can tell that Burke’s research and experience as a law professor and her expert from the NYPD have made sure there is very little ‘artistic licence’ required. Totally absorbing crime thriller that any reader will enjoy with an excellent more
