Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Husayni al-Sistani born August 4, 1930) is the highest-ranking Twelver Shia marja in Iraq and leader of the Shia Hawza of Najaf. Though historically reclusive, Sistani is famed for having become instrumentally involved in a number of important post-war Iraqi political and religious negotiations, including the Constitutional Provisional Authority's compromise on the constitutional process. Additionally, Sistani is recognized for progressively issuing a fatwa calling on all Shia (especially women) to vote in Iraqi elections, and also for asking Shia communities to abstain from retaliation to Sunni sectarian violence.
