The Ageless Sojourner *Day of Summer Rain* Out front was a small yard with rail fencing, a California olive tree on one side, and an English walnut in the side yard. Every spring, his mother would plant pansies around the foot of the olive tree in little bunches that she brought home from the feed store. Blue, yellow, red, white, some variegated, and so on. As he watched her plant, at the time he was not aware of the love she put into it. It was only many years later as he was thinking of her, remembering how so carefully she removed the delicate little pansies from the cardboard containers, gently squeezing the root soil, and with more care, placing them, with added planting mix, in the little hollowed-out places around the foot of the olive tree. Without calendar, the neighbors always knew when they had seen the last frost of the winter, and the arrival of the vernal equinox in the foothills. Howard never thought to come close and ask if he could help. I think he sensed that this was part of her private world by which she watched the passing of her years, the passing of her life. For as long as anyone could remember, after his mother died, in the spring the old man continued to plant pansies around the foot of the venerable olive tree.
