(Source: Purchased in paperback from Play.com.) This is book 4 in the 'Evernight' series, and picks up where book 3 'Hourglass' left off. **Warning - some unavoidable spoilers for books 1, 2, & 3 - 'Evernight', 'Stargazer', and 'Hourglass'.** After the events of book 3, Bianca and Lucas have both got some changes to adjust to. Bianca needs to learn how to live as a wraith, and Lucas needs to learn how to live as a vampire, and there's only one place for him to do that - Evernight Academy. With Evernight Academy up and running again, Lucas seeks refuge, whilst Bianca tries to work out what Mrs Bethany is up to with the wraiths that she has drawn to the school. What does Mrs Bethany want with the wraiths? Can Lucas learn to control his hunger? And can a wraith and a vampire ever be together? This was a great final part to Bianca and Lucas' story, and I liked how it all ended right where it started - Evernight Academy. Bianca really came into her own in this book, and it was great to see how much she'd changed from the whiney, selfish girl that she was in book 1. I loved how she'd really found the person who she was supposed to be, and had gained strength from that. I liked the storyline in this book, and I couldn't wait to find out what would happen after the events of book 3! I really didn't know how Lucas would react to becoming a vampire, and how this would change things for Bianca and Lucas as a couple, especially considering the whole vampires and wraiths don't mix thing! As usual there were moments in this book where I just thought 'what?!' Newly dead Lucas wanting to chat with his vampire-hunter mother - Very Bad Idea. You think that he'd have worked out by now that she DOESN'T LIKE VAMPIRES! And Lucas telling Bianca that she 'has no idea what his hunger is like' - excuse me, did she or did she not go days without blood and hide in a black cross cell in order to be with him? Hmm, bad Lucas, bad! I did like the ending of this book though, I'm always a bit wary of the end of a series because I hate to end up disappointed, but I have to say that I really liked the ending to this one. I thought the author handled it really well, and actually managed to make a happily ever after out of a vampire and a wraith! I have to say that I didn't expect to like this series quite so much after reading Evernight, but Hourglass and Afterlife were well worth reading Evernight and Stargazer for! Overall; a great end to the series. 7.5 out of 10.show more

I remember when I finished the first installment of the Evernight series and how I didn't feel to keen on it and disliked it for its typical overratedness with a boarding school and vampires. And now that I finished the last book of the series I have realized that the first book of any series isn't always as good as the last. And no one should give up on a series just because of the first book. The great thing about series' is that the author has room to make the plot better and the events more exciting and thats what Claudia Gray managed to do with her Evernight series. And she accomplished a lot just by writing "Afterlife", the last installment to the Evernight series. The story immediately starts up where "Hourglass" (3rd book of the series) leaves us. The tragic end of a character so close to the readers. As our protagonist, Bianca fights her way into her new "Afterlife" to save all the people she loves by stopping an evil antagonist that I'll refrain from spoiling for you. I was surprised to find unpredictable moments in this book and found myself regretting calling this series cliche. It indeed had its uniqueness with the main and secondary characters as well as rarely mentioned supernatural beings and the plot overall. Though the love story between Bianca and her counterpart in this story Lucas is very cliche, cheesy and perhaps a little naive but you can't help but think its romantic. All the characters managed to grow physically, emotionally and as characters themselves. They are more pleasing now than they ever were in the beginning of the series. Best bits of the books was when the fights occurred during the end of the book as vampire, human and wraiths join together to defeat the never ending life of the series' antagonist. And hopefully succeed. I know for certain that others may seem disappointed at the books ending but I certainly am not. I enjoyed the book and found the writing impressive now than before. Claudia Gray has grown into a great author since the beginning of her Debut and I'm looking forward to reading more from her in the future.show more
