The poachers were out to catch game, and the gamekeepers were out to catch the poachers. But at present the two parties were a long way from each other. As we five boys all stood huddled together intently listening, Nichols made a little slip, and in saving himself from falling caught hold of some twigs, which snapped in his hand. The poachers heard the sound, and thought it was big game on the move. Two of them--it must have been more than one--fired off their guns right at the spot where the expedition was standing. Shrieks and yells filled the air. The expedition was shot! Every boy had got shots in him somewhere--either in face, legs, hands, back, or some portion of his body. That gallant expedition was peppered with small shot, every member of it bleeding somewhere, also howling. We heard a voice cry, "Bill, we've shot the keepers. Bolt!" But Eaglebeak yelled " Help! we ain't keepers. We're only boys. Help!" Then three men came crackling through the bushes to us, and I never saw such surprised-looking men as those three poachers when they arrived on the scene of carnage. We said something to them, but never remembered what. But I remember the biggest one taking me by the scruff of the neck--just where I was most shot--and saying, "Wot ha' yer got in them bags? Wy, Bill," he went on as he seized our bags, "blow me if the warmints ain't bin a-priggin' our game! Bring 'em along." Then the poachers dragged us to a clearing where what little moon there was had a better chance of showing her light.
