Aelderon was conceived almost fifty years ago in the early 70s as an allegory of everyday life in anytown. The setting may seem fantastical but it is not a fantasy. The characters described can be met in the workplace, in the home, in the media. Their motivations are recognisable and understandable. As are their relationships and the predicaments they find themselves in. It is about everyday emotions love and hate, hopes and dreams, wanting and getting, revenge and regret. The novel is set in the capital city of a mountain locked land and follows the events in that land over the course of a single day, as seen through the eyes of those that live through it and some that do not. It examines how individuals deal with crises, political and personal, and how the choices of a few can effect the lives of the many. How the enemy is not always the foe at the gates. 'All the time posing questions that neither he nor Mauri can possibly answer. Questions designed to vex and increase anxiety. Who did this? Why? What is happening? Why is this happening? Who is in charge? Will there be more? With all this, how can 'we' be prepared for the Myrms? Once given breath such questions cannot be taken back.' 'There is real concern in the city and they could allay it by telling the truth about what is happening and what is expected to happen. They know the theory, yet here they are bottled up with their peers, invisible men. Their indecision dressed up as attention to detail, meaning interfering in the work of others, debating the detail, not trusting others to do the right thing, their way. Fearing that it is in the detail that accountabilities can be blurred, boundaries crossed, authority diminished and the foundations of future praise and blame lain down.' 'Minutes pass and eventually, slowly the cathartic sobs die away. She raises her head. Her eyes are red. She lifts the hem of her dress and wipes her face. Breathing out a final, quivering sob, she swallows and looks around. The sun is shining full on the lawns and filling the trees. Its powerful beams igniting the flowerbeds with colour. Estath could easily believe that she has been asleep and just awoken from a terrible dream.' Aelderon is a novel printed in two volumes of around 630 pages more
