A compound word is one which consists of two or more parts, each of which is a significant word by itself: dog-cart, moon shine, star light, gentle J man j like, deputy-quarter-master-general. When the parts of a compound word have thoroughly coalesced in meaning, the hyphen (-) is generally omitted: sunshine, lamplighter. 0. Compound words may be distinguished as follows: --(i.) Compound nouns which consist of (a) A noun preceded by a noun: Hog-cart, starlight, teaspoon. (6) A noun preceded by an adjective: nobleman, midsummer, alderman. (c) A noun preceded by a verb: pickpocket, telltale, catchpenny, wagtail. (d) A noun preceded by a numeral: twilight, fortnight, sixpence. (e) A noun preceded by a pronoun: self-respect, self-love, sell-will. (/) A noun preceded by an adverb: forethought, afterglow, Bypath, (g) A noun preceded by a gerund: turning-to/te, riding-Aao!'. (A) A noun preceded by a preposition: afternoon, forenoon. (ii.) Compound adjectives, which consist of (a) An adjective preceded by a noun: blood-red, sky-blue, Axe-proof, taii-brown. (b) An adjective preceded by an adjective: bXue-blark, blue-green. (c) An adjective preceded by an adverb: upright, over-nice. (d) A past participle preceded by an adverb: underdone, outspoken, overfed. (e) A present participle preceded by a noun: heart-rending, wire pullintj. (/) A past participle preceded by a noun: book-fazrned, earth-oorw, tempest-tossed. (iii.) Compound pronouns (see pages 50 and 51). (iv.)
