Not illustrated. 1901-01-01 edition. Excerpt: ...The pamphlet states that 10,000 persons are now taking this course of instruction, but it wisely refrains from giving the number of those already become proficient in the hellish art. They are, however, to be found everywhere. Only this morning I gave a man five cents, when a dispassionate review of his personal history and antecedents and a severely minute analysis of his mental condition and moral character would, I am satisfied, under normal conditions, have deterred me. While under his influence I pitied him; but I am now convinced that he was one of the most picturesque of all harmless liars. Then there was the man who sold me thirty-two volumes at $3 per month for ever so many months; the philanthropist who let me in on the ground-floor of the oil speculation; the queer-eyed customer who persuaded me that I needed a $200 diamond on the installment plan; these and others--they must all have been taking lessons at $5 per. And the sum total of these experiences makes me feel silly. Mr. Angell, upon reflection, you are right. This dangerous art is the work of the devil, and those who practice it should be promptly and effectually hanged. With anguish as poignant as the grief that racked the devoted soul of Editor Hewitt upon discovering that there exist more insurance magazines than are strictly necessary to his individual comfort, I was compelled to decline the Record's invitation to celebrate, couched in the following form: The Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Celebration of THE INSURANCE RECORD will be held at Delmonico's Fifth Avenue and 4'ith Street on Thursday evening, February 27th, 1002 You are cordially invited to attend To Mr. J. A. Carey R.S.V.P. Exercises begin promptly at 7 p.m. It is a matter of history now. All the more
