Description

Excerpt from Address Delivered Before the Philodemic Society of Georgetown College, July 25, 1837 The usual formality in appearing before you, on the present occasion, would be to express my thanks for the honor which you have been pleased to confer on me. This I not only comply with, as a custom, but I beg you to be lieve, that I do so with the deepest and most cordial senti ments of which I am capable. For, your invitation calls me back to my own alma mater, and surrounds me with congenial scenes and congenial faces. Once more does it bring me to tread the consecrated ground of my childhood; and to breathe, after no little weariness in the bustle oflife, under the shade of those hallowed trees, which, when I Sported under their foliage as a child, were tender and young, like my own spirit, and pliable to the direction given by the hands of those who planted them where they have clasped their roots.
