About Joel Stewart

Joel Stewart was brought up in a commune in the wilds of Yorkshire. From an early age he was knocked sideways by stories, and invariably lay on the floor drawing pictures to recover. Later, in the year 2000, he graduated with a first class degree in Illustration from Falmouth College of Art. Ever since graduating (and slightly before) he has been writing and drawing for a living, and has recently moved into animation design and directing for television (while not forgetting books!). He also plays a variety of musical instruments and lives with them and some fish in London.show more

Review quote

"Stewart's empathetic tale about a lost bear in a wintry city does what the best picture books do: it tells the story through images as much as words." The Sunday Times "With beautiful illustrations and a stunningly simple and lyrical text, this is a story that children will want to come back to again and again." Through The Looking Glass Children's Book Reviews "Each illustration creates a little scene, with depth and a sense of place, and the draughtsmanship is reminiscent of Ardizzone. Characters (and pigeons) recur, rewarding observant pre-readers" -- Nicolette Jones The Sunday Times "It's a tribute to [Stewart's] understated painting that fresh details keep emerging after repeated readings" Evening Standard "Gorgeous pictures intertwine perfectly with the words to tell the story of Addis, who comes to the city and forgets why he's there. Three-year olds and up will love it" -- Kati Nicholl Daily Expressshow more
