Adam Clayton Powell, Sr. (May 5, 1865 - June 12, 1953) was a clergyman, author, and father of Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Adam Clayton Powell was born in Franklin County, Virginia to Sally Dunning, a woman described as mulatto but whose racial heritage is full-blooded Cherokee. The identity of his father is African American. According to Powell's memoirs, Against the Tide: An Autobiography (Richard B. Smith, 1938) his biological father was unknown, though two years after his birth, in 1867, his mother married Anthony Bush, a former slave, who changed his surname to Powell.
