There were stately senators in toga with broad purple stripe, and knights wearing the golden ring, and white-robed citizens crowned with garlands of flowers. And there was a motley mob, clothed in all garbs, and speaking all tongues known to the world. Broadshouldered Germans from the forests of the Elbe, lithe Gauls from the busy wharves of Marseilles, Spaniards from Cordova, who already spoke with pride the name of their young townsman Martial, and who whispered to one another that the great fallen Minister, too, was of Spanish blood. There were Parthians who had fought for Vologeses their king, and Armenian subjects of the crafty Tiridates, brought over by the conqueror Corbuto to swell his train. There were ragged Jews from the Hebrew quarter, and swarthy Egyptians from Alexandria, who talked of the bygone times when Roman generals laid down their swords in the bowers of Cleopatra. There were fierce-faced Britons who, at the bidding of their queen, swept down upon the legions of Suetonius and found defeat and exile; and there were thick-lipped negroes from far up the immemorial Nile, who jabbered and gesticulated to the amusement of the crowd. All poured into the amphitheatre through a hundred different entrances. It was a huge oval structure which, viewed from above, seemed like some stupendous punch-bowl of the Titans.
