That Christ imparteth Himself by degrees, that His imparting Himself to us is His producing effects in us, that these effects are are two justifications, not merely one with a double aspect;-two justificationsinterconnected, yet practically separable, so that the first may be without the last, and the last may virtually be without the first; two justifications, the one distinct from renewal, identical with the virtues of the Spirit, there being no such thing as a habit of grace distinct from a habit of faith and love; that we are born again in receiving " the seed of God," that is the First Grace which God poureth into them that are incorporated into Christ; that it is infused into the heart: that this participation of Christ carries with it the presence of Christ's person and incorporation into his Church; that saving grace is received in Baptism by all that are capable thereof, by all the elect, but not by all the baptized;--that the seed of life, (the first fruits of Christ's Spirit, ) is never lost by those to whom it has been once imparted, but brings the possessor to endless felicity; that, although in the reception of grace there are degrees, yet sonship to God is no matter of degree; and that he who has obtained that virtue of the Holy Ghost which gives to the powers of the soul their first disposition to godliness, is already a Son, and alive in the Saviour.
