CATARRHAL OR LOBULAR PNEUMONIA (BRONGHO-PNEUMONIA), Usually occurs in the lungs of children, or may follow an ordinary cold in old or weakly persons, it is observed in those portions of lung which have become collapsed irom bronchitis, single lobules with the small bronchi and the surrounding tissue being usually alone involved, these being red and firm. In this form the consolidation is limited to single lobules, and disseminated over the lung in variously sized patches. In plastic or lobar pneumonia the consolidation is massive. Again, lobular pneumonia is nearly always accompanied, or even preceded, by capillary bronchitis; it is constantly associated with whooping-cough and measles. It may always be considered a morbid secondary process, seldom, if ever, occurring primarily. There is no dulness on percussion, unless the inflammatory centres have united over a considerable portion of the lung substance, in which case certain dull areas may here and there appear, and auscultation may merely show the signs of bronchitis. The temperature is high; both lungs are usually affected; there are no rusty spnta nor distinct rigors. The mortality is far greater than in the lobar variety. On section in a recent case, the lobules appear as illdefined reddish-grey nodules; bloody fluid can be squeezed out, and the surface of the lungs is smooth instead of granular.
