The Counsel were informed that there being no counter-claimant in this case, it was very important that the Attorney General should have an opportunity of considering the documents to be tendered in evidence, and that for that purpose it would be better to postpone delivering them in until the time when the remainder of the evidence was tendered. Mr. Fleming asked permission to examine two or three official witnesses to save them the inconvenience of attending again. He stated that they would only be called to prove the handwriting of certain documents. The Counsel were informed that this evidence might be given, and that if the handwriting of the documents was proved, copies might be deposited, but that they must not be printed, and the question of the admissibility in evidence of the documents must be reserved until a future day. Rev. Thornton. Then the Reverend THOMAS THORNTON was called in; and having been sworn, was examined as follows: (Mr. Fleming.) Are you the Registrar of the University of Durham? I am. Do you produce the original books of that University? No; I produce two certificates (producing the same). Do you produce those certificates from the muniments of the University of Durham? They are certificates which are given to the candidates when they pass their examination. Are those the original certificates so given? They are. Is that within your own knowledge? No; I was not registrar then. But is it within your knowledge as registrar that these would be the proper certificates to give? Yes. Are you able to say that those are genuine certificates? Yes. You know the handwriting of them? Yes; in the one case 1 have known the writer personally; in the other case I know the writing well from the books. In the...show more
