The Carolina Panthers are a professional American football team based in Charlotte, North Carolina. They are currently members of the South Division of the National Football Conference in the National Football League. The Panthers, along with the Jacksonville Jaguars, joined the NFL as expansion teams in 1995. In their existence, the Panthers have compiled a record of 125-141, and appeared in Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston, Texas. The 1998 Carolina Panthers season was the fourth season for the team in the National Football League. They tried to improve upon their 7-9 record in 1997, and make it to the playoffs for the second time in franchise history. As it would turn out, however, the Panthers fell to 4-12 in 1998, 4th in the NFC West. Dom Capers, who had been the Panthers head coach since their inception in 1995, was fired at the end of the season, and replaced by George Seifert.
