About Monica Fernandez - Toti

Monica Fernandez was born in Guatemala. The youngest of 6 children. Her parents died from long cancer when she was 10 years old. She lived in 17 different houses. Rebellious, at age 16 she became a smoker herself up to 2 packs a day!!! She started to swim at age 22 to help her lungs. Ended up quitting and doing triathlons, found her passion in the sport. After many sprint and olympic size triathlons, she decided to try for an Ironman. She became the first Guatemalan woman to participate and finish an Ironman in Hawaii. She wanted to find more challenge and longer distances. She signs up for the Ultraman (a 3 day triathlon that circumnavigates Kona, the big island of Hawaii. She became 2 time Ultraman World Champion and then went to Ultraruning. She has participated in 3 of National Geographic's top ten world's toughest races: Marathon des Sables, Badwater and Furnace creek 508. She lives in Guatemala, has two boys, and works teaching Baby Survival Swim, to babies and toddlers, stroke school for older children. She loves influencing change through public speaking and motivating people to realise and accomplish their dreams.show more
