    eBooks FAQ

We are no longer selling eBooks on Book Depository. However do use the FAQs below to help with any queries you may have about past purchases.

Do I need to be logged in to my account?

Are your eBooks compatible with my device?
Please check our Device list page and click on your chosen reader to see whether it is compatible with the eBooks we sell. Please note only our free eBooks are compatible with all devices.

Please note, that you will need to install Adobe Digital Editions eBook library software to access your purchase. This software is free. If you set a default reader all results will be formats that are suitable for your device.

Why can't I buy eBooks for my Blackberry/iPad/iPhone/Kindle/Kobo?
We do offer a range of free eBooks that will work on these devices, but as the eBooks available to buy from us are wrapped with DRM at the request of publishers, unfortunately they cannot be read on these devices.

Please see our eBook user guide.

    What is DRM?
DRM stands for digital rights management; this is a way for publishers to limit eBooks to one account and prevent the illegal sharing of files.

We offer several types of Adobe DRM files: E-Pub DRM Applied and PDF DRM Applied. An E-pub or PDF file that uses Adobe's DRM wrapping won't be readable on any device that doesn't support Adobe Digital Editions. They also won't be readable using any other software, other than the stated Adobe Digital Editions. See more information regarding Adobe Digital Editions.

Can I share eBooks with friends or resell my eBooks?
Unfortunately there is no way to share or resell eBooks that are protected with DRM.

Can I buy an eBook as a present for a friend?
We can't currently support eBook gift purchases.

    Can I print my eBooks?
No, eBooks can't be printed as this would be a breach of copyright law.

What kind of internet connection do I need to download eBooks?
We recommend that you use a broadband connection to download eBooks.

    Updating Adobe Digital Editions software
We recommend regularly checking to see whether your Adobe Digital Editions has the latest software upgrades installed. Please note if you do not keep your software up to date, this may interfere with future downloads.

How do I transfer my eBooks to my Sony Reader using Adobe Digital Editions?
Adobe Digital Editions allows you to transfer items from your library to a Sony Reader. To make the model PRS-505 compatible with Adobe Digital Editions and you have the original PRS-505, you must first download the firmware updater and new version of the Sony eBook Library from the Sony Reader PRS-505 product site and install it on the model PRS-505.

Note: It is important to install Sony eBook Library in addition to the PRS-505 firmware update, as it will install the necessary drivers. After the drivers are installed and your PRS-505 is updated, you can proceed to the step below.

Connect the Sony Reader to your computer and launch Digital Editions. Digital Editions automatically detects the presence of your Sony Reader and offers to authorize it with your Adobe ID. If you have not authorized Digital Editions with your computer, you will need to complete that first (Digital Editions guides you through that process: view the Activation and Authorization topic). Both Digital Editions and the Sony Reader must be authorized to be able to transfer protected content to and from the Sony Reader. Unprotected content can be transferred to and from the device without authorizing either the device or Digital Editions, but Adobe strongly advises authorizing Digital Editions as it gives you content portability for your protected books, whether on Digital Editions or your Sony Reader.

After authorization, the Sony Reader appears as a new bookshelf in your library. You can transfer items to and from the Sony Reader bookshelf just as you do with other bookshelves in your library. You can read (as well as bookmark) books that are on your Sony Reader or your own computer. You can even read books off of your friend's Sony Reader (though you cannot transfer books from his Sony Reader to your computer or vice versa).

Important: Do not disconnect the Sony Reader while transferring library items to or from your computer.

Note: Text annotations in eBooks appear as bookmarks in the Sony Reader.

If you need support for the Sony Reader, please visit the Sony support site:

Can I download my books to more than one computer with Adobe Digital Editions?
Yes, you can authorise up to five computers and transfer books as long as all computers are authorised using your Adobe ID.

I have downloaded an eBook, but I can't seem to find it on my computer?

    Please check the following:

    • You have Adobe Digital Editions installed on your computer, and that you have clicked "save" (not open) when saving the download - opening the file before saving it on Adobe may bring up an error message.
    • Assuming that you are using Internet Explorer it has probably been saved to Documents - Downloads
    • Try a full computer search for <13 digit ISBN>.acsm, or search for recent files on your computer.

Once you find the file you have to open the file in Adobe Digital Editions.

Why am I only allowed three downloads - am I allowed any more?
We are unable to increase the number of downloads available, if we were to allow any more we would risk being in breach of copyright laws.

I have found the eBook I require, but it is out of stock - how is this possible?
This will be because the eBook is not being made available to our suppliers - we're trying to stock as many titles as we can, but there will be some that are not being made available to us, and so we cannot offer these to customers just yet. Additionally some title are restricted by territory so may not be available to your country.

I have not yet downloaded the eBook - can I cancel and be refunded?
Yes, as long as the file has not been downloaded we can cancel your order. Refunds cannot be issued once the file has been downloaded.

    No refunds for eBooks
Books are non-refundable once they have been accessed by the customer, and cannot be returned once purchased. If you wish to cancel an eBook order do not attempt to download the file, as we will not be able to refund the order once this has been done.
