Thrilling middle part of a very unique space saga
Despite the rather slow start (and a completely unexpected time jump of thousands of years in the future) the book continues the relentless and exciting pace its predecessor set up by its end and continues the amazing and captivating story of the fall and the rise of the galaxy. What was impressive in the first book, continues to be even more impressive in this one. With only 5 main characters (and with even less secondary characters than that) Williams still manages to convincingly a space opera in which the future of mankind as whole is at question.
Not only did Williams give us an interesting story, but there are rather nice and thought provoking views on one's individuality, human life (both the worth of it, and people's will to live or to die) and also society and politics. And all that is fused with the story in a very organic way.
With big revelations and even bigger twists this one sets up a great prelude for the final book in the series which I'm very much eager to read now. I feel that if Grand Conjunction, Book 3 of ASTROPOLIS, manages to give this series a great ending, both Book 1 and Book 2 will probably get an extra punch and stand even better in retrospect. So far the story evolved and progressed nearly flawlessly. by Josip Malenica
