Alaine Bucknall Hugh Le Despenser's father and grandfather where executed when Hugh was a young man. He spent months in prison but eventually was released and had to deal with life coming from a disgraced family. Hugh works hard to build up the trust of the King and ultimately becomes one of his most trusted knights. Hugh falls in love with a low born family friend and because of this is in no hurry to find a wife.

Bess de Montacute was 14 years old when her father told her that she was to be married to the son and grandson of disgraced traitors who was twice her age. Honestly, I found Bess to behave like a spoilt brat early in the book and she did annoy me at times. But as Bess warmed to Hugh I warmed to her as a character. By the end of the book she was a wonderful caring person who was changed by her marriage and the relationship she had with her husband and her best friend Emma and the way in which her life was touched by the black plague. by Alaine Bucknall
