Anabela A M Nunes In the beginning of Poison Study we meet Yelena. She?s facing a death sentence for murder, but before being hanged, she?s offered a job as the food taster for the Commander of the military state of Ixia, which she accepts. Then, we readers find ourselves engrossed in Yelena?s journey for a better life (as well as watching her attempt to stay alive), while she discovers her own amazing abilities.
One of the best things about this book is definitely Yelena. She?s strong, smart and the girl can definitely kick some ass (yet I think she?s really far from being like Katniss from The Hunger Games or Rose from Vampire Academy)! And then there?s Valek. You have got to love the guy ;) Valek is the Commander?s right-hand-man, and one of the best assassins in Ixia, as well as being the one who trains Yelena for the job as food taster. I really enjoyed reading the parts when he taught her about all the poisons and I found it important that he was constantly testing her. Well, I guess that?s mostly because I just wanted him to like her (what can I say, I?m a hopeless romantic). Throughout the book, Yelena finds she has some magic of her own, which is totally prohibited in Ixia, but it sure helps when she needs to defend herself from Brazzel, the man who?s trying to execute revenge on the murderer of his son, who, as fate would have it, happens to be Yelena.
This book was a good read. Will I re-read it? I?m not sure, it won?t be on my favorites list, but it was worth reading. It?s a story about adventure, magic and friendship, but I guess I was hoping for a lot more in the romance department (here we go again XD). I mean I liked the relationship between Yelena and Valek, but the romance involved in the end, felt rushed. Overall, I think it?s a good book and I?m hoping the sequel will outshine this first one. by Anabela A M Nunes
